Tactical Radio

Radio, one of the most traditional of electronic technologies, is also one of the most flexible. Among the uses of radio for informal communication are community radio, grassroots neighborhood networks, and webcasting of all kinds, and from all places.

EXAMPLES

The DC Emergency Radio Network
Aware of the collapse of routine communications in the wake of 9.11, users of walkie-talkies are turning them into ad-hoc neighborhood networks. One Washington, DC man set up a website to promote residents are afraid of what might happen should an attack on the city occur and normal communication channels such as the telephone or television are unavailable. Their solution is to use their handheld walkie-talkies that have become popular recently as an emergency communication tool. By using neighborhood listservs to spread the word, organizing tests and offering flyers for distribution, DC residents with walkie-talkies can get information to one another in the case of an emergency.
