Creative Consequences for Filmmakers of Copyright Law to Be Discussed at American University Panel

Washington, D.C. (October 26, 2004) – American University’s Center for Social Media and Washington College of Law will host a panel discussion on the creative cost of the ‘clearance culture’ from 4 – 6 p.m. on Monday, November 8 at AU’s Washington College of Law Room 603. A screening of AU filmmaker Brigid Maher’s short film Stories Untold precedes the panel.
The panel discussion and viewing launch a new study written by professors Pat Aufderheide and Peter Jaszi, "Untold Stories: Creative Consequences of the Rights Clearance Culture for Documentary Filmmakers." The study, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, draws on dozens of in-depth interviews about permission and rights clearance with documentary filmmakers working in today’s theatrical and television environment. The report reveals the creative cost of the "clearance culture" and presents ways to address the problem. The report will be available at http://centerforsocialmedia.org/rock/index.htm on November 8.
