John Ficara is a freelance photojournalist
who has worked for three years documenting the disappearance of
the black farmer in America, a study that began as a Newsweek assignment
while he was on staff for the magazine. He will be discussing his
new book on the subject, Distant
Echoes.
John Ficara has traveled the globe as
an editorial photographer, photographing domestic and international
news and politics. He has covered the White House for Newsweek through
five presidential campaigns and four administrations and has produced
38 cover images for Newsweek as well as covers for a variety of
international magazines. He
has won numerous awards and honors including a Desi (Design in photography)
for his cover photograph of Pope John Paul ll in the Philippines
and in 1992, a National Headliners Award for "Feature Photography"
for his Persian Gulf coverage. He has been honored by World Press
Photo, the National Press Photographers Association and the
White House News Photographers Association.
