Testimony: The Maria Guardado Story
The story of Maria Guardado, who received political asylum from the United States in 1983, after fleeing the U.S. backed civil war in her native El Salvador.
April 23, 5:30 PM
5:30-8:00 pm, Wechsler Theater, 3rd Fl. Mary Graydon Center, AU campus
Because of her political activity, Maria Guardado had been targeted by the Salvadoran death squads in 1980. She was tortured, raped and then left for dead in the street. Now living in Los Angeles, Maria reveals how she recovered from her personal horror and how she continues her life as a political activist and poet, injecting her survivor’s perspective into that city’s diverse and evolving progressive movement.
In March of 2000, Maria returned to San Salvador to participate in the grand march commemorating the 20th anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero, whose stand for the people against military oppression cost him his life. Along the way she returns to her hometown of San Miguel to revisit and reflect on the past.
Film screening will be followed by discussion with Maria Guardado and director Randy Vasquez.
More information about the film can be found at www.mariaguardado.com. Information about the director can be found at www.myspace.com/thickdarkfog
