Educating Diverse Communities: An ethnic media briefing with Education Leaders from DC, MD and VA

Please join American University School of Communication, New America Media and American University Center for Social Media for a special briefing on ethnic media with education leaders from the DC metro region.

April 30, 9:30 AM

9:30 - 11: 30 am, Butler Boardroom, American University Campus, 4400 Massachusetts Ave. NW, Washington, D.C.

Public schools in the Washington, D.C., metro area educate one of the nation’s most diverse populations. Afghan, African American, Chinese, Ethiopian, Indian, Korean, Mexican, Persian, Salvadoran, Vietnamese and many, many others – each of these groups have a unique history and culture that enrich our school districts, as well as challenge our administrators to reach out to, and provide the best education for, these communities.

Ethnic media provide a valuable link to better connecting families to the school system. It’s well-known that education of the next generation stands as a top priority – the top priority – in communities of color and among immigrants.

Participants:

  • Michelle Rhee, Chancellor, D.C. Public Schools
  • Dr. John Deasy, Superintendent of Prince George’s County Public Schools
  • Dr. Robert G. Smith, Superintendent of Arlington Public Schools and nationally recognized educational leader in eliminating the minority-white “achievement gap”
