YouthNOISE

YouthNOISE, a youth activism site sponsored by Save the Children, offers a variant on the "Donate Now" button. Their "Just 1 Click" operates on the model of "click here and we'll donate." Each time a visitor clicks a designated button, a host sponsor donates a small amount of money, such as five cents per click, to a specified cause. YouthNOISE has proven that this technique can generate a large volume of clicks and sizeable amounts of money. It has used "Just 1 Click" to generate $5,000 to build a safe playground for kids in a dangerous neighborhood, $10,000 in tuition scholarships to a camp for homeless children, and $10,000 in school supplies for Afghan girls.

This technique encourages youth to give and raises valuable funds. Nevertheless, the "you click/we give" model raises questions. Can it make charitable giving a lasting behavior among young people? Does it contribute to their sense of civic responsibility? Or might it suggest to young people that they can fulfill their obligation to the greater good with "just one click"? Does it imply that they can rely on others to contribute to the good of society, rather than taking positive action themselves? Such questions bear further research.

By the way, under their "Take Action" section, YouthNOISE also promotes other ways for young people to "share the wealth," from participating in the annual Toys for Tots campaign, to learning how to raise funds themselves.
