American young people believe that volunteering for community activities is important,
and in 2002, 40 percent of youth and young adults donated time to a group.
So it is not surprising that, of the 300 websites we reviewed, a whopping one in three provided opportunities
for, or links to, volunteer activity. Some were nothing more than invitations for youth to volunteer with
the organization posting the website. Others, however, were electronic portals, opening the door to
volunteer opportunities in hundreds of organizations, working locally, nationally and around the world.
The Internet's power to expand youth volunteering is most visible in these portal sites.
SERVEnet and Idealist are two websites that offer a wealth of volunteering
opportunities for young people who are looking to contribute their time and talents. Please take
