
An emerging aspect of civic engagement is the understanding that the civic role can
extend beyond the borders of nation-states. The Internet's ability to transcend both time and
geography helps to make international collaboration possible. Some youth websites build on this
capacity, using the Net to help young people interact in innovative ways with their peers in
other countries and cultures. Some five percent of the sites in this study explore global
affairs or foster international understanding among youth.
The iEARN (International Education and Resource Network) website is an excellent example of a youth civic
