Public Anthro Conference
email discuss Posted by Micael Bogar on Oct 29, 2008 at 9:01 AM
On October 31st and November 1st at American University the Anthropology department is hosting the Public Anthro Conference. Of particular interest for us at the Center is Nino Shapiro Perl’s skills workshop: Toolkit for Storytelling: Visual Anthropology and the Arts in the Butler Conference Room from 3:30 to 5:00pm.Here’s a bit from Professor Perl on the workshop:
Don’t miss this event! The whole workshop is free and open to the public.Using the perspective of an anthropologist and the tools of a documentary filmmaker, my work for the past 25 years has been documenting the stories of service workers — janitors, hospital workers, bus drivers and homecare workers in their struggle for wages, rights and respect. Using video, photography exhibits, playback theatre and digital stories, I have sought out artistic ways to make workers seen and heard, seeking the personal or small story inside a larger story while trying to engage the heart of the audience.
In this workshop I will show examples from the practice of Visual Anthropology — videos, photography, and digital stories — and discuss choices that were made in producing these programs. For the second half of the workshop, we will discuss the digital story and its transformative potential to change the conversation between adversaries, with the public, within our own classrooms, with Stefani Sese of the Center for Digital Storytelling.
