Media That Matters

email   discuss Posted by Ann Williams on Jun 4, 2007 at 10:29 AM

ArtsEngine recently hosted its Seventh Annual Media That Matters Film Festival in New York City. Sixteen inspiring new short films were selected for this year’s event. The Center for Social Media was THRILLED to present this year’s Fair Use award to The Apollos by young filmmakers Nick Parker and Jazmin Jones.

The Apollos recounts the story of a group of Oakland Tech students who, in 1981, succeeded in lobbying to name a holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In addition to being a remarkable short film, The Apollos is a stellar example of what is possible when filmmakers know their (copy)rights!

Many thanks to the ArtsEngine folks for their hospitality and to Byron Hurt (Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes, I Am A Man) for co-presenting the award.
