Staff Bios Giovanna Chesler

Chesler is a director and producer of documentary and fiction films whose work has screened in fifteen countries in over 100 juried film festivals. Her films have been broadcast on television, exhibited in museums, and covered prominently in major media outlets including the New York Times, USA Today, Telemundo and the CBC.

Through her narrative and documentary films, Chesler explores constructions of gender, the body, sexuality, and women’s health. Her most recent documentary, Period: The End of Menstruation (16mm, 54min, 2006) has received world-wide attention as a central resource on the menstrual suppression debate. Period regularly screens at universities, women’s centers, and gender forums throughout the U.S. and Canada. Period is distributed by Cinema Guild, NY.

Her short films BeauteouS: The Trilogy (16mm, 43min, 2000-2002) and hand-some (16mm, 13min, 2004) have garnered awards including the Gold Plaque for Best Student Documentary from the Chicago International Film Festival - 2000.

Sound theory and documentary theory figure prominently in her critical research; a recently published article in Jump Cut, Spring 2007, explores a ‘sound first’ pedagogy in the audio/video classroom, and she will present an article on documentary sound at Visible Evidence 2007.

She works in community-based video education projects teaching feminist media literacy and video production skills to girls. As a professional, she works as a cinematographer, having shot a six-part video series for Discovery Education Networks and films for independent filmmakers and media artists.
