511.001 History of Documentary
"The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” —William
Faulkner
"The past is not for living in; it is a well of conclusions from
which we draw in order to act.” —John Berger
This course explores the history of audio-visual documentary, with
an emphasis on the North American experience, in both reflecting and
shaping the history of the time. It will be as important for us to
look at the formal choices of filmmakers—how they decided to
express their ideas—as it will be for us to examine what they
chose to film and why. |
